Flora-Fauna Library of the Landscape

DeutschFranzösisch

We assume that there must have been a larger library at Schloss Ahlhausen at one time, which, like so many other things, has been forgotten and disregarded over the last two centuries. In 2012, only a huge baroque cupboard, which was made of solid oak in the Dutch style and may have come from a local Westphalian furniture manufacturer, contained a remainder of 45 old bibliophile works from the areas of agricultural cultural knowledge and knowledge about flora and fauna of most Western European countries.

An older magazine article on the history of Schloss Ahlhausen from the 1970s reports on painting work in the interior and there is information that the master painter discovered an old chest in the attic that was filled with old law books. Even if these legal works could no longer be found at Schloss Ahlhausen, it can be assumed that the books in the old library still contained an agricultural collection from the von Ahlhausen family from earlier centuries and probably when the entire property was sold to the Gograf in 1770 Moritz Bölling remained in whole or in part at Schloss Ahlhausen as being sold. This is then either by Moritz Bölling, who headed the high court in Schwelm, or above all by his son Moritz Friedrich Heinrich Johann Diedrich Bölling, who also worked as a legal scholar and made a great contribution to the connection of Prussian law with Napoleonic law, with a significant legal department have been expanded. But there are also agricultural and forestry works from the period after 1770, so that the two Böllings will probably not have lost sight of the old collection from the von Ahlhausen library.

Where exactly this old library was housed in the early baroque building ensemble of Schloss Ahlhausen is still easy to understand today, because the huge baroque cabinet and the corresponding furniture, of which only an equally huge library cabinet remained empty, can only be found in the largest room of the main house have found space on the upper floor. In 2012, activities were therefore started to restitute the remainder of the old library at Schloss Ahlhausen as a "flora-fauna library of the (Rhineland-Westphalian) landscape". This will again constitute the book inventory with works from all centuries up to the end of the 19th century in the areas of flora and fauna, agriculture and law and will add the area of the history of the counties of Mark and Berg to it as a further department.
